I would also add working on a signal for allowing your puppy to let you know when they need to go. If you like the finish on your doors and door frames, you will want to discourage scratching. I use bells hanging from a hook by the door. I started off making sure that I rang the bell everytime that I opened the door to the backyard to let her out to potty. It didn't take her long to figure out that there was something about that bell and door. Then I started to teach her to ring the bell with her nose before I would open the door. Your pup needs to be a little bit older to do this so they don't pee by the door while trying to figure this out! Ebony was about 4 months before she was old enough to do this consistently. We still had a wet spot or two but she was ringing the bell when she wanted the door to go out and play and for most of her bathroom duties. By 5 months, she had it down and no oops since then.
